Summer Hair Care: Protecting Your Locks from Sun and Saltwater

By Laura Leiva|

Prolonged exposure to sun, saltwater, and chlorine can leave your locks dry, brittle, and damaged. Here’s how you can keep your hair healthy and vibrant all summer.

  • Hydration is Key: The summer sun can be harsh, stripping your hair of its natural moisture. To combat this, focus on hydration. Use a deep conditioning treatment once a week to replenish lost moisture. Look for products with ingredients like argan oil, coconut oil, and shea butter, which deeply nourish and hydrate your hair.

  • Shield from the Sun: Just as you protect your skin from harmful UV rays, your hair needs protection too. Wear a wide-brimmed hat or a scarf when you’re out in the sun for extended periods. For added protection, use a leave-in conditioner or a hair spray with UV filters to shield your locks from sun damage.

  • Pre-Swim Protection: Rinse your hair with fresh water before diving into the ocean or the pool. If your hair is already wet, it absorbs less saltwater or chlorine. Applying a leave-in conditioner or hair oil can create a protective barrier. After swimming, rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water to remove residual salt or chlorine.

  • Gentle Care: Summer activities can make your hair more prone to tangling and breakage. Use a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle your hair, starting from the ends and working your way up. Avoid using heat-styling tools as much as possible, and let your hair air dry to minimize damage.

  • Trim Regularly: Frequent trims are essential to keeping hair healthy in the summer. They prevent split ends and help maintain hair’s overall health. Aim to get a trim every six to eight weeks during summer.

  • Nourish from Within: Healthy hair starts from within. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and maintain a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals. Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon and walnuts, and vitamins A and C, like sweet potatoes and citrus fruits, can promote healthy hair growth.

By incorporating these tips into your summer hair care routine, you can enjoy the season while keeping your locks strong, shiny, and protected. Embrace the sun and sea confidently, knowing your hair is well-cared for!
